Polling for the first presidential election after the worst economic crisis of 2022 in Sri Lanka has been completed, after which the counting of votes continues.
According to foreign media reports, Sri Lanka went to the polls for the first presidential election since the worst economic crisis of 2022 on Saturday, with thousands of voters casting their ballots by 5pm local time.
During the election, more than 63,000 policemen, including the army, were deployed to ensure security.
According to reports, a curfew was imposed in Sri Lanka for 8 hours after the voting process was completed to maintain law and order while counting votes.
It should be noted that there are 38 candidates in the field for the presidential elections, in which tough competition is expected between President Ranil Wickramasinghe, opposition leader Sajath Prem Dasa, and left-wing leader Anura Kumara Dissanayake.
After the voting process is completed, the counting of votes continues.
According to reports, the presidential election results will be announced today, with a run-off between the second-placed candidates if no candidate gets 50 percent of the vote.
